Tung oil, also known as China wood oil, is a drying oil made by pressing the tung tree’s nut for the seed.
How To Use
Tung oil is a natural oil that comes from the seeds of the tung tree, and it is used primarily as a finish for wood. Here’s how to use tung oil:
Prepare the surface: Make sure the surface you will be applying the tung oil to is clean, dry, and free of any debris. Sand the surface lightly to ensure that it is smooth.
Apply the tung oil: Using a clean cloth, apply a thin layer of tung oil to the surface. Make sure to work the oil into the wood, applying more as needed until the surface is saturated.
Allow the oil to penetrate: Allow the tung oil to penetrate the wood for about 20-30 minutes.
Wipe off the excess: Using a clean cloth, wipe off any excess tung oil. Make sure to remove all of the excess oil to avoid any tackiness.
Repeat the process: Depending on the desired finish, you may need to apply multiple coats of tung oil. Wait 24 hours between coats, and follow the same process as above.
Tung oil is also used as a natural sealant for stone surfaces, such as granite and marble. It is applied in the same way as on wood surfaces. However, be sure to test on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility and to avoid any damage to the surface.
